burn

light me up

know me

name the spark

before you go

twisting one breath

into a thousand

tearing the fabric

of this vintage us

into useful rags

and when i find a scrap

bitten by dusty years

it might still smell

like smoke

depend

heart drops with fading sun

then rises with her too

amidst the muddle

of missing

wondering

seeking

laughing

giving thanks

making music

some constants

persist

inside this perpetual swing

of me

:

You

breath

and song

solo

it happens after they leave

in ones-twos-threes

mumbled farewells

hugs

exchanging gratitudes for what went on here

rumbling cars and voices

decrescendo into the kind of

silence

that leaves me groping for my way

through this lighted room

metronomes of heart and clock

untidy rhythm

stumbling over each other

aloneness without

matching aloneness

within

tone

the carpets don’t quite

line

  up

the chair

is way too hard

one by one

they file in

too small

twenty-five minutes

too short

here

i tell them

take this gift

let it bring you

happiness

wisdom

long after you

leave it gratefully

behind
